Out and About in Alajuela!
We have been to the provincia de Alajuela a couple times in the past eight months. Alajuela is one of the seven provinces in Costa Rica. It is north of San Jose and west of Heredia. It has quite a few volcanoes in the area. The weather is very cold at the higher elevations. Some of the highlights of are travels have been,
Sarchi,
Sarchi is a town nestled in the hills of Alajuela. The town is known for its handy crafts, such as wooden furniture, leather rocking chairs, and hand painted ox carts. The chairs in our house were made in Sarchi. One of my favorite things we saw was a giant ox cart that was hand painted. The entire town is decorated with the beautiful ox cart patterns.

Arenal!
One of the most popular volcanoes in Costa Rica is called Arenal. Arenal is about 1,600 meters above sea-level.
We went to Arenal to go to the hot springs. We stayed at a resort called Tabacon. Tabacon is named after a town that was destroyed in 1968, the last time the volcano erupted. Tabacon has a series of geothermal pools that you can swim in that are all heated by the volcano. The pools are different temperatures and some are mixed with cool river water as the different streams flow through the park.

Kayaking in Bahìa Rica!
We went kayaking in a bay close to us..... at night?!
Did you know that is actually very hard to see your fellow kayakers and where you are going? Luckily, we didn't go very far. The main reason we went out was to see this.....

Phosphorescent plankton. When you put your hand or paddle in the water it lights up like a bunch of fairy lights. When fish jump it lights up in ripples. You know when you skip a rock it makes ripples around each skip? Well, imagine that but all lit up. It was very hard to photograph but it was really neat to see it. If you ever in Costa Rica, Bahìa Rica Adventures is a good place to go to see it. It's amazing.
Ciao!
